The annual Rhino Ride is held on the magnificent Manyoni Private Game Reserve (MPGR), a 23 000 hectare proclaimed private nature reserve, home to over 70 mammal species including Africa’s BIG 5. All proceeds from the Rhino Ride go directly into the Zululand RHINO Reserve Foundation who use the funds raised to assist the MPGR in critical Rhino conservation projects.

The 21st century brings with it a scourge of poaching, especially threatening our magnificent Rhino. The situation to date is so severe that an increasing number of privately owned game reserves are disposing of their Rhino, as they are considered too much of a risk in relation to the rising security costs of protecting these animals. Protected, favourable habitat for these splendid creatures is at a premium, and as we, the MPGR, are fortunate enough to have this at our disposal we are dedicated to expanding this, their range & their population.

During the weekend not only will you be treated to breath-taking views, magnificent Zululand scenery & the Big 5, but you will also gain an awareness of the challenges the MPGR & we all face in the fight against rhino poaching.

2016 Rhino Ride

Each year we ask ourselves “can we raise more money for the Rhino than we did last year?”  and each year we are blown away with your generosity.  Together we have raised an incredible R663 352 for  the protection & conservation of our Rhino on the Manyoni Private Game Reserve.
When the #RhinoRide began in 2012 & raised R123 000, we never imagined that in just 4 years we would exceed half a million rand!  Over the past 4 years the #RhinoRide has brought in a total of R1’836’000 for rhino protection.  This shows the dedication and generosity of each and every person who comes together over the weekend to make it the success it is today – THANK-YOU!

A special thanks must go out to our sponsors, who each year give more and more to our event.  Grindrod Bank, our anchor sponsor, who not only assist us financially, but also provide a great deal of direction and encouragement throughout the planning and execution of the Rhino Ride.  The Supatrade Group, who keep the cyclists nourished en route and provide us with all the fittings and fixtures for the showers & electrics.  Jonsson Work Wear, who came on board this year with the sponsorship of the T-shirts.  The inspirational team from Uzwelo Bags, who not only sponsored the unique goodie bags, but who also managed to get a whopping 587 Uzwelo School Bags pledged at the Rhino ride, these were handed over to the Manyoni School in November 2016! Rhino Tears Wines, who yet again had you all watered and fed during the ride, as well as donating the cold beers at the finish that went down a treat!

2015 Rhino Ride

The money is in, the sums have been added and it’s official…the 2015 Rhino Ride has raised an incredible R525 219.77 for Rhino conservation in the Manyoni Private Game Reserve.  Can you believe it OVER half a million rand…we can’t!!!
It is with sincere gratitude that we would like to thank each and every rider, spectator, sponsor, marshal, helper and supporter for enabling us to achieve and raise this incredible amount of money for Rhino conservation.

Karen Odendaal, Managing Director of the MPGR has this to say in the money raised
‘On behalf of everyone at the Manyoni Private Game Reserve we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to every person that contributed to the success of the Rhino Ride, it was not in our ‘wildest’ dreams to have thought that we would be the recipient of half a million rand to use towards rhino conservation on the MPGR, a dream that has now come true!! The monies raised from this years ride will go along way towards assisting our rhino conservation efforts on the Reserve and we plan to use them specifically in  the introduction of new rhino, the protection of our current rhino, the rehabilitation of rhino calves orphaned due to poaching as well as towards the treatment of rhino injured in poaching incidents. I now have peace of mind knowing that we can fight the fight and have the financial resources to do so, thank-you!

2014 Rhino Ride

We were thrilled to have a full complement of 215 riders at the 2014 event – who arrived not only to brave the Zululand heat & hills but also our ever growing pride of lions! (What started with the introduction of 7 Lion in 2012, has rapidly grown to 15, and counting). It is through your support for our events that our conservation initiatives such as this succeed.

The 2014 Rhino Ride proved a great success with just over R330 000 being raised. These funds will go a long way to assist us in the on-going battle against Rhino poaching and to support us in ensuring the safety and security of our precious Rhino on the Manyoni Private Game Reserve – a HUGE thank you to each & every one of you who contributed to make this possible.

A very big thank you & mention must go out to all sponsors that came on board at the 2014Rhino Ride, without whom the event would not be possible.

A special thank-you to Grindrod Bank our anchor sponsor for the 3rd year running, and it was great to hear on the Friday night that Grindrod Bank have recommitted their support of the event again in 2015. Further thanks go to Spar Mkuze Supatrade, Bayete Zulu, Polaris, Emma Gatland Photography, Republic South Africa (RSA), Fairfield Dairy, Mavela & Static Control, Racefood, Leopard Mountain Game Lodge, LT Printers, Sheena Arnott, African Spirit Game Lodge & Republic Umbrella.
